If your oven won’t heat, the cause depends on the type. Electric ovens usually need a bake element; gas ovens need a working igniter. A bad temperature sensor, tripped breaker, or control-board fault can also be behind it. Here is what to check before you call.

Quick checks

  • Power: is the breaker tripped? (electric)
  • Element glow: does the bake element glow red evenly? If not, it’s likely failed
  • Gas igniter: does it glow but never light the burner? A weak igniter is the usual cause
  • Clock/mode: make sure it’s not in a timed or locked mode

The usual parts

On electric ovens, a burned-out bake element is the most common fix ($150–$300). On gas, a weak igniter that can’t open the gas valve ($180–$320). A bad temperature sensor makes the oven run cold or never reach temp.

Safety

If you smell gas, turn the oven off, ventilate, and don’t use it — call your gas company if it’s strong. For everything else, we test the element, igniter and sensor and give you the price before any work.
