To move a refrigerator safely, empty and defrost it, secure the doors, keep it as upright as possible, and — most important — let it stand upright for several hours before plugging it back in. Tilting it lets compressor oil flow into the lines, and running it too soon can damage the compressor.

Before the move

  • Empty it and remove shelves and drawers
  • Unplug it and defrost the freezer
  • Tape the doors shut and secure the cord
  • Use a dolly and keep it as upright as you can

The critical wait

If the fridge was tilted or laid down during the move, let it stand upright for the same amount of time it was tilted — at least a few hours, ideally overnight. Compressor oil needs to settle back out of the cooling lines; plugging in too soon is a leading cause of a fridge that won’t cool after moving.

If it won’t cool after moving

If you waited and it still won’t cool, the move may have stressed a line or the compressor, or it needs more settling time. We can diagnose it and give you the price before any work.
