Water left standing in the bottom of your dishwasher means it isn’t draining. The usual causes are a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose, a jammed drain pump, or — very commonly — a new garbage disposal with the drain plug still in place. Several of these you can fix yourself.
Check these first
- Filter: clean the filter at the bottom of the tub
- Disposal plug: if a disposal was just installed, the knockout plug may still block the drain
- Drain hose: check for kinks behind or under the sink
- Air gap: clean the air gap on the countertop if you have one
If it still won’t drain
A jammed or failed drain pump, or a stuck check valve, is the next most likely cause. You may hear the pump hum without water moving. That’s a repair, usually $180–$320.
